Coming together for a series of concerts, Iranian and First Nations artists hope to "sustain and nurture" their musical traditions.
Mohsen Sharifian, a musician and composer from the port of Bushehr in Iran, will be performing in Australia alongside Indigenous artists William Barton and his mum, Aunty Delmae Barton, in a tour called Harbour to Harbour.
Sharifian's folkloric ensemble, Lian Band, and the First Nations artists will come together to blend the ney-anban (Persian bagpipe) and didgeridoo, traditional Iranian and Indigenous instruments...
Iran’s acclaimed Lian Band, led by ney-anbān player Mohsen Sharifian, is making a return to Australia with From Harbour to Harbour 2 performances in four cities. In the Melbourne and Sydney shows, their Australian guest artists are William Barton and Aunty Delmae Barton, who began the concert with a poetic spoken word celebration and welcome, backed by Barton’s didgeridoo and the Lian Band members. In Melbourne, from the first moment, as each performer appeared onstage, the audience roared their delight and they didn’t stop all night.
This is no polite classical concert – there is banter, backchat and a lot of extroverted noise – it is so much fun. And did I mention the dancing in the aisles?
An extraordinary musical experience is set to build on a sold-out debut series in 2023- that attracted over 2,200 attendees – as the second Harbour to Harbour tour brings together two ancient musical traditions on a grand scale.
This tour will reunite the Lian Band, a leading folkloric ensemble led by Mohsen Sharifian from southern Iran, with Indigenous Australian artists William Barton and Aunty Delmae Barton, blending the soulful ney-anbān (Iran’s traditional bagpipe) with the deep resonance of the didgeridoo
